France: Notre Dame de Reims

The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Reims has been the site of many historic events including the crowning of 29 French kings. Among those kings is Charles VII, who was crowned through the support of Joan of Arc.

Notre Dame de Reims has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2011. Every year, more than 1 million people visit this historic site. We visited here as part of our trip to the city. We chose a hotel within walking distance so that we would not need to use our car.

The first thing you will notice is how visually magnificent the cathedral is. It is one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in the world. In the front of the cathedral is a bronze equestrian sculpture of Joan of Arc by Paul Dubois. Inside, there are magnificent stained glass windows, including two rose windows and a more modern window  by Marc Chagall.

Next to the Cathedral is the Palace de Musee des BeauxTau which holds the treasures of the cathedral.
